    -------------------------------------
    Research / Leads:

In the Monroe Twp., vital records, the family record for Alvah York and Eliza Ann York shows the birth of Walter Edwin on July 15th, 1845, and the death of Jeremiah York on April 28, 1844. The record for Jeremiah York is indented, in the position that children are normally listed. But, the death predates the marriage of Alvah York and Eliza Ann King, and not corresponding birth record for Jeremiah is found. It also now appears to not be his father, since Lydia, the widow of Jeremiah York of Frankfort, filed a petition for administration on 5 Aug 1857 stating that Jeremiah died on 28 June 1857 (not 28 Apr 1844).

His father-in-law (Sparrow King) appears in Monroe Twp., Waldo Co., Maine, in the 1820 and 1830 censuses. There is one York listed in the 1830 census in that township -- Archibald York, p.384. I was unable to locate Archibald York in the census for Maine or NH in either 1810 or 1820. Archibald is listed in the town vital records for Monroe Twp. -- he was not the father of Alvah.

The Annals of Oxford, Maine, p. 238, show the family of Jeremiah and Lydia York in Hebron, Oxford Co., Maine, with the following children: 1. Ira b.1806
    2. Ephelet, 1808
    3. Alvah, b. Apr 3, 1812 <-----
    4. Betsey, b. 1814
    5. Pauline, 1815
    6. Lydia, 1817
    7. Jeremiah, 1818
    8. Ruth, 1820
    9. Sally, 1822
    10. Josiah, 1824
Thanks to Ann Alexander for finding and making me aware of this reference, Nov 1997. The way it was stated, it is possible that the children, or some of them, might have been born elsewhere, e.g., NH. At this point, until more info is found, this is just a lead.

In response to my query, Mark Richards says he has an Abigail York (1756-1856) who married Tristram Richards in Middleton, NH and moved to Oxford ME in 1827. Joyce is also descended. Mark is descended from their son Stephen of Upton
ME. This looks like a possible connections, and further lends credence to the theory that Jeremiah of Oxford may have come from NH.

He was apparently living in Jersey City, New Jersey, until about 1879/1880, since adult records of son Rufus C. Rice state Rufus C's birthplace as Jersey City.

Exact birthdate & deathdate, from e-mail from Jo (Jackson) Rice

The obit of Harry S. Rice, Sr. (son of Rufus S. Rice) says "Rufus S. Rice was a Civil War veteran, having served with the 17th Connecticut Volunteers." Rufus enlisted in Aug 1862 and was discharged for medical reasons in Jan 1863.

From http://home.att.net/~DogSgt/images_pvt.html (17th Connecticut Volunteers Website):
Rufus S. Rice enlisted Aug 19, 1862, discharged with disability Jan 17, 1863, served in Company C as a private.
His company was attached to the defences ofr Baltimore, Maryland, 8th Corps, Middle Dept., until October 1862.
They had duty at Fort Marshall, then from Oct 15 to Nov 3 at Tennallytown, building Fort Kearney.
On Nov 3-12, 1862, they marched to Throughfar Gap and Chantilly. Then from December 1862 to
April 1863 they had duty at Brook's Station, Virginia. Rufus discharged in January, just before his unit
went on the "Mud March". Soon after his departure, his unit fought in the Chancellorville Campaign Apr 27-May 6, Battle of Chancellorville May 1-5, Gettysburgh Jun 11-24, July 1-, Hagerstown Md Jul 11-13, and moved to Folly Island SC Aug 1-12.

    =========================================

His parentage is currently unknown. One possibility is a Rufus Rice age 1 in 1850 in Sanford, Broome Co., New York, father Orsin D. Rice [IGI Batch 7132804]. Siblings include Reuben, 11, Sherman, 8, and Sylphina, 6. Note however that to be consistent with the 1900 census, Rufus should be 6 in 1850, not 1, so I have little faith that this is him.

Most likely theory: He is probably a grandson of Rufus W. Rice (1792-1872) of McGraw, NY, who m. 1817 Lucilla Stevens. He was the son of Moses Rice from CT. Rufus has 11 children. They are, in birth order, Clark, Samuel, Rufus Jr (b.1822), Lafayette, Darwin, Septimus, B. Franklin, John, Charles, Lurilla, and Ralph. A descendant of B. Franklin Rice is Martin Errol Rice (b. 1949), 696 N. 1st Ave. N., St. Petersburg FL 33701-3610, (813) 821-4884. I send a letter to Martin 12/31/96. This info is from The Early Rices of Salisbury, Herkimer Co., NY, sent to me by Rosemary E. Bachelor (Note: I am now convinced that he was a grandson of Rufus W. Rice. There were several Crofut and Crofoot families in that area, both in Cortland Co., as well as in Chenango Co. adjacent to the east.)

Another possibility: Tirus/Tyrus Rice Sr. was at Salisbury when the 1810 census was taken. Tyrus Rice Jr., b. 1804 in VT, m. 1824 Sopia Foster (b.1810 NY). Their children were: Ellen, Ai, Fatima, Horace, RUFUS, Justis, and Jonathan. All but Rufus (b. 1836 PA) were born in Salisbury, even though four were older and two younger. This Rufus Rice married Sophia Munger.

    Notes:
That she was the wife of John Holmes is inferred from her record of death in [Mayf.Des. 16:23 5] as "Mrs. Sarah Holmes".

It is not known whether they married in Plymouth, or whether they immigrated together. MacKenzie, "Colonial Families", gives a child Thomas born in England, and if John Holmes is the John, son of Thomas Holmes of Colchester whose will mentions grandson Thomas, son of John, then this would indicate that a marriage in England is more likely.

Marriage Record [MD 14:39]: "Asa Beales to Rohoda Lathle Desember 8th 1720", intention in [MD 18:143]: "Ase Beale to Rhoda Lathle 1 Oct 1720".

And in [MD 11:79]: "John Rouse of Little Compton alias of Marshfield & Anne Lathley of Sd Marshfield were married, June ye 29th Anno 1720".

(Note that John and James are prime candidates for her father).

Records of the First Church in Marshfield, Mass., contain record: [August 17 1717]: "The same day Anna and Margaret Lethlys were baptised, daughters of Philip leathly" [MD 31:122] <--- My guess is that this is her!

Note: Marcy Lathley, dau. Philip and Mary (Bishop) Lathley, m. 1722 in Truro William Tilton. Note the Truro tie. If this is the same Philip as in the 1718 baptism record, then the 1718 baptism is almost certainly her. The widow Mary above may be widow Mary (Bishop) Lathley. A little more research is still needed, however. The Lathley surname seems to have died out before 1790, since there are no Lathley's in Massachusetts in that year. It is extremely rare before then as well, with the above records constituting the only such occurances in the town records printed in the Mayflower Descendant. The equating of Margaret Lathley who married John Lewis with Margaret the dau. of Philip Lathley is as yet unproven, but after searching, I am starting to become rather convinced.
