    Thomas Keene

    Father: Thomas Keene
    Mother: Elizabeth Gosnold
    Birth: 1592/1593 ,England
    Death: 1653/1659 Northumberland,Virginia

    m: Mary Thorley (-AFT 1662)

    Children:

  • William Keene (10 MAR 1642-8 FEB 1684) m. Elizabeth Rogers (-1720) , children: 1. William Keene (11 SEP 1665-4 OCT 1700), 2. Elizabeth Keene (16 MAY 1669-BEF 23 NOV 1720), 3. John Keene (12 AUG 1671-ABT 1740), 4. Hannah Keene (4 FEB 1676-1739), 5. Sarah Keene (7 OCT 1678-).

  • Susanna Keene (1641-BEF 28 MAR 1716) m. John Garner (1632/1633-1702) on ABT 1660, children: 1. John Garner (-BEF 25 MAR 1713), 2. Henry Garner (-BEF 25 JUN 1745), 3. Vincent Garner (-1710), 4. Thomas Garner (-BEF 13 JUL 1726), 5. Parish Garner (-1718/1719), 6. Benjamin Garner (AFT 1681-1718), 7. James Garner (-1726), 8. Mary Garner (-1720), 9. Susan Garner, 10. Martha Garner.
  • Matthew Keene (ABT 1650-1731) m. Bridget [---] (ABT 1658-ABT 1752) on ABT 1678 at Stafford Co.,Virginia, children: 1. Elizabeth Keene (ABT 1682-26 JUL 1749).
    Notes:
A very nice genealogy is written of him in ["Garner-Keene Families of Northern Neck Virginia " by Ruth Ritchie and Sudie Rucker Wood, 1952, pg. 187-193]

In a 1648 deposition, he stated his age to be 55 [Md. Arch., Vol. 4, pg. 452]. Thus, he was born about 1593.

He may have been the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Gosnold) Keene of Suffolk, England. That couple did have a son Thomas Keene, named as a grandson in the will of Robert Gosnold of Earleshall, County Suffolk, Esq., 1615. That son also had a cousin, Anthony Gosnold, in Virginia in 1615. But absolute proof that the the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Gosnold) Keene is the same person as the Thomas Keene of Kent Island, Maryland has not, to the best of my knowledge, yet been established conclusively.

He lived on Kent Island, Maryland, from probably 1631 until probably 1644. It is possible he was among a group of inhabitants who moved to St. Mary's county, Maryland in 1638, but if so, he returned to Kent Island by 9 Nov 1640. He was probably with a group of islanders led by Col. Clayborne that moved to Northumberland Co., Virginia in 1644, but in 1648 he was resident in St. Marys County, Maryland (just across the Potomac). He resided at Cherry Point, Northumberland Co., Va by 9 Dec 1650 where he died in 1652.

He was a cooper and possibly merchant by trade, as well as a planter, and directed the making of "pipe staves" while on Kent Island.

!Will: Dated 27 Nov 1652, probated Jan 20, 1653, [Northumberland Co., Va. R.B. 14, p. 16; Ritchie & Wood p. 190]. Names son Thomas, dau. Susanna, son William, son Matthew, wife Mary. Also contains a long list of people owing him or owed to by him. Overseers: Hen. Mosely, John Stanley, Thomas Orlye, Matthew Rhodon. Wit: Henry Rainer, John Knight.

    on ABT 1654

    m: Thomas Broughton (ABT 1622-)

    on 22 MAR 1658 at Northumberland,Virginia
    Notes:
Her maiden name is infered from a will of Edward Thorley of Anne Arundel County, Maryland [Md . Cal. Wills, Vol. 1, p. 212], dated Dec 1678, probated 10 Feb 1678/9, believed to be her brother. In it, he bequests to his "Cousin Thomas Keene". At that time, the use of Cousin would refer most likely to a nephew. This conclusion is not rock solid, since it is possible that the relationship was indeed not that of nephew, or it is possible that the Thomas Keene named refered to another by the same name. Indeed, ["Keene Family Genealogy" owned by Harvey Warley Stedman, 1958, p.11] lists "Thomas Keene, living 1679, cousin of Edward Thorley" as a son of Henry Keene of Wadsworth, Surrey. However, the inference there was made purely as a result of the existance of the Ed. Thorley will and the presence of other sons of Henry Keene in Maryland. It thus appears that the Thorley theory is reasonably strong.

    !Marriage(2): Deed dated 22 Mar 1658 [North. R.B. 15, p. 19; Ritchie & Wood p. 191] shows her to have married Henry Raynor.
!Marriage(3): Northumberland B. 15, pp. 19-20, records the marriage agreement, on 22 Mar 1658, of Mary Raynor, widow of Henry, and Thomas Broughton [Ritchie & Wood p. 191-2]

!Will: "Of Mary Broughton Widow relict of Thomas Broughton decd.", [Northumberland Co. R. B. 15, p. 92; Ritchie & Wood p. 192-3]. Dated 2 Jan 1662, recorded Feb 10, 1662. !Birth-Death: September 1, 1993 Letter from Geraldine M. Spooner, Librarian at Buck Memorial Library, Bucksport, Maine (see below).

On August 31, 1993, I called the Bucksport Library and talked to Geraldine Spooner, Librarian. I had come to realize that William Birch Reed and his wife Elizabeth were probably buried in the Riverview Cemetery, which I had neglected to search for when I visited Bucksport. I also knew that a lady there (who wishes to remain anonymous) was in the process of transcribing the tombstones in the Riverview Cemetery, and so I requested that she look for William Birch Reed and his wife in that cemetery. The next day, September 1, 1993, she mailed a very interesting letter with the following information to me (I assume it came from tombstone or cemetery records):

    "Dear Mr. Chrisman,
Regarding your telephone conversation of August 31, 1993: I spoke to the lady who is doing the cemetery research. She gave me the following information:

Elizabeth Reed, Widow of William B. Reed, Born at Truro, Barnstable county, Mass. Nov. 20, 1776 Died Sept. 27, 1844 Age 77 Years, William B. Reed, Born at Snowhill, Worcester county, Mass., Aug. 23, 1767, Died Sept.3, 1814, Killed at Orrington, Me. (just beyond Bucksport) by a cannonball, fired from the English Sloop of War, the Sylph, commanded by Commodore Barry.

His tombstone, as transcribed in ["Inscription from Grave Stones at North Bucksport, Maine" in the Maine Hist. Magazine, 1898, p. 1573] reads: "William B. Reed, born Snow Hill, Worcester Co., Maryland, Aug. 23, 1767. He was killed at Orrington by a 36 pound cannon Ball fired from English Sloop of War Sylph Commanded by Commodore Barrie Sept. 13, 1814. Wife Elizabeth born Truro Nov. 20, 1767, died Sept. 27, 1844, aged 77"

I found this very interesting and glad we could be of help in your search. Sincerely, Geraldine M. Spooner, Librarian."

Note that the dates and age of Elizabeth are off by 10 years in the above letter. It appears that the typist of the letter accidentally transposed the digits in the birthdate from 1767 to 1776. The date 1767 properly accounts for her age and brings the record into agreement with the birth record for Elizabeth Eldridge.

    --------------

They may have had one additional child, John Reed of Bucksport who married Marcy Nickerson of Orrington (cert. rec. 2 Dec 1819, Orrington).

On 8 Nov 1789, "William Birch Read, and Elisabeth his Wife" were Covenant Owners at the Truro Church [Mayf.Des. 28:23]
