    Notes:
Nona & Lydell Reed report that when Edna M. York wrote to her mother, Mrs. A.B.York, the addr ess was "Jadis, Minn."

    Census (1870):
York, Alvah, age 58, White Male, Farmer, $1400/$519, b. New Hampshire,
    ----, Eliza A., age 57, W.F., Keeping House, b. Maine.
    ----, Willard B., age 91, W.M., Farmer, b. Maine.
    ----, Hatta W., age 19, W.F., w/o occupation, b. Canada.
    Location=Nashville, Mart Co., Minnesota.
[Note: The age for Willard B. should have been "21", not "91"]

Census (1880): Yorkville, Brown Co., Dakota Territory (Roll 111: 84-15-1):
York, Harriet, White Female age 29, wife of Willie York and in household
of Alvih York, married, Occ=Keeping House, b. Canada, Father b. Vermont,
    Mother b. New Hampshire.

On death certificate of Edna M. Reed, her mother is listed as "Harriett A. West" (or possibly Wisk) born in Vermont.

She was of a Methodist upbringing and was active in the Methodist church her whole life.

-------------------------------------------------------- There is only one Harriet West found in the Vermont Censuses of 1850, 1860 of approximately the right age. She was 1 in the 1850 census. This was Hattie Amelia West, dau. of Asahel G. and Laura Emeline (Bonors) West of Morristown, Lamoile Co., Vermont. That Hattie Amelia was b. 4 June 1849. However, THIS IS NOT HER. After long research, I discovered that the Hattie of Morristown married Curtis J. Slayton in Dec 1869.

Her identity and marriage record remain unsolved.

Because Vermont Records have been so thoroughly scoured (all vital records and census records have been searched), perhaps the Canada theory should be considered more likely now.

I think it is highly likely that she is a decendant of Thomas and Deborah (Freeman) West of Tisbury, Mass; Rochester Mass, and Montpelier Vt.

There is this (unlikely) birth record: Hattie Pauline West, b. 14 July 1852 Tyringham, Berkshire Co., Mass., to George W. and Paulina C. (Baker) West.

I believe it is likely that she was the daughter of John B. and Harriet E. West who resided in Pleasant Mount Twp., Blue Earth Co., Minnesota in 1870.
Though not yet proven, there are a number of items making this hypothesis seem likely. First, John B. West was born in Vermont, his wife & children that were still living at home were born in Canada (dau. Ellen age 16 b. Canada demonstrates they were living in Canada in c1854). Evidence suggests that Hatta (West) York was b. Canada with Vermont connections. Next, John B. West was enumerated in the 1870 census adjacent to N. F. York. Nathaniel T. York obtained a land grant in Blue Earth county on Sept 10, 1870 - the same exact day that Alvah York obtained his land grant for land in adjacent Martin county from the same land office. Further, N.F. York (b.c1820), his wife, and his son, were born in Maine -- consistent with the origins of Alvah York.

!Marriage: Orrington VR, published in ["Orrington, Maine, Marriages", Maine Hist. Mag., 1898, pg. 116]. Reads: "1793, Oct 13. Daniel Snow, of Hampden, and Betsey Brooks, of Orrington"

Either he is the Daniel Snow living in Canaan, Lincoln Co., Maine in 1790 (about 40 miles west of Orrington) with 1 male over 16 living alone, or he is not enumerated in that census. Probably it was him.

Neither he nor his wife were found in the 1860 census of Orrington, Maine.

!Death: Barbara Lewis Williams p.99. Cites Tombstone for exact date. !Tombstone: Originally located at Old Methodist Church in North Bucksport. The church burned down in the 1850s, and that cemetery was virtually abandoned, until recently (late 1980s) when all stones that could be located were moved to the Riverview Cemetery, and Lathley and his heirs were given a 32 sq.ft. lot. The move was organized by Barbara Lewis Williams, also a descendant.

!Will: Printed in Barbara Lewis Williams pg. 100, from Hancock County Probate Docket No. 91. It is dated 17 April 1807, and names "wife Thankful", and children (several underage): "James, Nancy, Elisha, Hannah, John, Lathley, Betsy, Thankful, Olive, Cinthia, Joseph, and Peggy"

    James Reed

    Birth: Snowhill,Worcester Co.,Maryland

    Children:

  • William Birch Reed (23 AUG 1767-3 SEP 1814) m. Elisabeth Eldridge (20 NOV 1767-27 SEP 1844) on 24 AUG 1788 at Truro,Barnstable Co.,Massachusetts, children: 1. William B. Reed (31 JUL 1789-AFT 1880), 2. John Reed, 3. Littleton Reed (7 AUG 1792-26 MAR 1863), 4. Elizabeth Reed (ABT NOV 1794-19 JAN 1874).
    Notes:
!Source: Jacob Whittemore Reed, "History of the Reed Family in Europe and America" by Jacob W hittemore Reed; Boston, John Wilson & Sons Printer; 1861, page 492-3.

Jacob Whittemore Reed says he was born in Snow Hill, Worcester Co., Maryland to English parents, but gave to further clue to his wife or parent's identities.

Perhaps a clue: The will of Thomas Couch of Cape May Co., New Jersey, bequests 1/2 of his estate to Elizabeth Read (daughter of Littleton Read). Proved 10 Dec 1794. Since his grandson had this name, perhaps the name was common in the family. Cape May is the southernmost tip of N.J. [Calendar of Wills 1791-5, in New Jersey Archives, Vol. 37, pg. 91, 1942].

A similar clue: A Little Reed b.c1751, lived in Sussex Co., Delaware, m. Elizabeth Onley, then moved to Accomack Co., Virginia, son of John Reed (b.bef 1730, d. bef 1773 Sussex Co., DE), and grson of John Reed (b.bef 1710, d. aft 1769). This littleton's was also the grson of William Abbott. Records include [Sussex Co. DE Deeds, Vol. L-11, p.330] "Little Reed and Elizabeth, his wife, of Accomack Co., VA, to Lawrence Reiley... former property of Smith Onley, deceased, who [left] 3 children, John Onley, Tabitha, and Elizabeth, later the wife of Littleton Reed....". Several other records detailing this family are in my files, sent to me by Johnita P. Malone in Jan 1998. Again, the name similarity may be a clue.

There is also another Reed family in Sussex Co., DE, whose ties to the above have yet to be established. The other family descends from James Reed, b. c1720, d. c1774 in Sussex Co., DE. His son b.c1744 Sussex Co., d.c1808 in Sussex Co.DE. Johnita is a descenant, and believes this James may have came from near Snowhill Maryland or Somerset Co., Md. Again, many records in my files.

    In Frederick Co., Maryland:
2 Jan 1794, Sold 28 Nov 1793: Benjamin Harrison Herrick of Washington Co, MD to James Reed of Frederick County for 5 Pounds, Lots 1157 and 1269, which came to him as "heir at law to my deceased Joseph Herrick." Witnesses: Alexander Clagett, Adam Ott

In [Scharf, Thomas J., History of Delaware, 1609-1888. Volume Two- pp. 1147-1171. CHAPTER LXII. SOUTH MURDERKILL HUNDRED, http://www.accessible.com/amcnty/DE/Delaware/delaware62.htm], there is a mention of a James Reed who would appear to be a very like brother to William Birch Reed. The text reads: "James Reed, the grandfather of Jehu M. Reed, was born near Snow Hill, Md. He married Miss Davis, the sister of the Rev. Benjamin Davis, who is buried at Barrett’s Chapel, as tradition says, in a reverential attitude, and was the playmate of James Reed in boyhood, living on opposite sides of the road, Reed and Davis both being farmers near Snow Hill, Md. ... The children of James Reed were Thomas, Jehu, James, Mary and Elizabeth. Jehu, the second son father of Jehu M. Reed, was born May 5, 1805; died November 30, 1880. !Census 1850: James P. Haynes, age 21, shows up in the household of John and Nancy Haynes of Sangamon Co. It is this census record that establishes his parentage. The age is consistent with his age in 1855 and 1860..

    Nancy, 6, F, ILL
    John W, 4, M, ILL
    Amelia, 1, F, ILL

When comparison with the known birthdates, the 1860 census appears to have been taken between 27 Feb 1862 and 7 Apr 1862.

Preston Haines enlisted in 1861 for three years, in Co. B, 11th Missouri Infantry. He died 14 Feb 1863 in the Military Hospital in Keokuk Iowa. His widow remarried to W.T.Williams, had one children (Martin L.) and resides in Cotton Hill, Twp. [Hist. Sangamon Co., Ill., pg. 594]

Some unlinked records that may be connected:

A Preston Haines shows up in the 1850 census of Northern part of the 2nd district of Johnson Co., Illinois. That census entry (Roll 112, page 365, enum 5 Nov 1850, family 259/259) reads as follows:

    Nancy, 30, F, Ky
    William, 6, Ky

    Notes:
!Death: Truro VR:42 (p. 109 of transcription): "on the 24th Day of march 1765 Mr Jonathan Col lings of Truro Dyed in Truro Recorded by B : paine Town clerk"

    !Birth:Eastham & Orleans Vital Records p.13, Mayf.Des.3:230.

He and his wife (Susanna) were admitted to the Church in Truro on 13 Sept 1724 (Mayf. Des.9:77).

!Marriage (Elisabeth Vickerie): Eastham and Orleans Vital Records p.70a, reprinted in Mayf.Des.7:238 (1905).
    !Marriage (Elizabeth Vickerie): NEHGR 79:292.
!Marriage (Susanna Walker): Eastham and Orleans Vital Recors p.9, Mayf.Des.15:57.

    !Birth-Marriage(Vickery): Freeman's History of Cape Cod, p.1:374.

It is clear that he had a wife before Susanna Walker. The adult baptism of his sons James and Gamaliel appear in the Truro church records, and we can place their dates of birth to be at least 6 years before his marriage to Susanna, and he appears at that later time in those records with wife Susanna.

!WILL: Dated 12 Dec 1743 and proved 23 April 1765, mentions wife Susanna; son Gamaliel; grandsons Jonathan and James (both under 21, sons of Gamaliel); grandson Gamaliel Jr.; sons Andrew (executor) and Joseph (executor); daus. Elizabeth Clerk, Sarah Nickerson, Ruth Cobb, Susannah Rich and Deborah Arey. [MF VI:232]
