!Marriage(2): Mayf.Des.18:120, Benj. Shurtleff, "Descendants of William Shurtleff of Plymouth and Marshfield, Mass." Vol. 1 (1912) p.41, and Nat.Gen.Soc.Quar.74:96.

!Purpose (intention) of marriage (Lazerus & Jemima Holmes): Plymouth Mass Vital Records, p. 260, recorded in Plymouth on 7 Oct 1726. Reprinted in Mayf.Des.18:139.

!Purpose of marriage (Lazerus & Abigail): On 6 Oct 1733 in Plymouth. Recorded in Plymouth Vital Records, p. 254, reprinted in Mayf. Des. 18:120.

He is listed on a Catalogue of "Persons that have either Received or engaged in the Baptismal Covt... Novr 12 [1732] Lazarus Samson" in [Plymouth Church Records 2:213, in Pub.Col.Soc.Mass 23:510]. The record makes it appear that he had no wife at the time, which in fact, he did not.

On 12 Aug 1741, An Account Letter was filed in Plymouth Co. Probate Records #63 Vol 8 p. 410 for Deacon Benjamin Alden of Duxbury. The account lists 41 people who were paid debts by the estate or who debts were collected from by the estate. On this list appears Lazarus Samson, David Samson (twice), and several family and non-family members of the deceased.

His wife is listed on a list of members in full communion on 31 Jan 1742/3, indicating that he is alive at that time [Ply.Ch.Recs. 2:257 in Pub.Col.Soc.Mass 23:527]

On a list dated 30 Jany 1760, his wife is listed as "Abigail Samson Lazrs Wid" [Ply.Ch.Recs. 2:169 in Pub.Col.Soc.Mass 22:470]

On 12 August 1741, his name appears on the administration records for the estate of Deacon Benjamin Alden's estate as one of many who had to receive payment before the account could be settled. [Mayf.Des. 24:78] The list had about 40 people, including "David Samson".

30 June 1743: The Schooner Lemmon arrives in Philadelphia from Boston, captained by Lazarus Samson. [This is mentioned in the papers of Benjamin Franklin, where the editor states that BF's arrival from New England back to Philadelphia is undetermined, but lists the seven ships that are recorded as arrivin in Philadelphia during the week when BF would have returned.]

On Oct 17, 1753, Abigail Samson, widow, of Plymouth was appointed administratrix of Lazarus Samson, mariner, late of Plymouth, deceased. [Plymouth Propbate 13:137], [Genealogical Memoirs of the Sampson Family in America" by John Adams Vinton, 1864, pg. 124], [Plymouth County Mass. Probate Index 1686-1881, transcribed by Ralph V. Wood Jr., Picton Press, 1988, pg. 312 gives this administration Docket Number 17582, year 1753]. The Mayflower Society in Plymouth has these probate records on Microfilm.

Lazarus Samson is not listed in "Epitaphs from Burial Hill, Plymouth Massachusetts, from 1657 to 1892" by Bradford Kingman, indicating that this is probably not his burial place. The index does list Jemima (p.17) and Abigail (p.47), and Mary (p.38), but I only have the index. I viewed Jemima's headstone in person. Same holds for ["Index to Burial Hill its Inscriptions and Epitaphs" by Benjamin Drew, 1894]

On 1 July 1746, "Lazarus Samson [and others] were chosen to serve on ye jury of Tryalls at [Supr] Court".

On 4 Dec 1752, "Lazarus Samson [and others] were chosen to serve on ye Petit Jury for Tryalls at the next Court of Generall Sessions of ye Peace, and Inferiour Court of Common Pleas To be Holden at Plymouth on ye Third Tuesday of this Instant December" [Plymouth Town Records, Vol. III, 1743-1783, Memorial Press 1903, pg. 51].

Parentage unknown by me, and no candidate records of birth or parentage are known. In 1643 there were Abraham Sampson and Henry Sampson listed on the list of freemen in Duxbury [Shurtleff 8:189], and as far as I know, these two are progenitors of all other known Sampson/Samsons of Duxbury. Unless Lazarus was an immigrant, it is highly likely that he was a descendant of one of these two.

  • Joanna Atwood (8 JUN 1700-)
    Notes:
It appears almost "obvious" that she must be the daughter of Mary Bartlett, who married Mr. F oster & had a dau. Mary, and then remarried to Jonathan Morey in 1659. However, before jumping to this (apparently false) conclusion, check out the article:

"Mary, wife of Nathaniel Atwood -- evidence to show why she was not Mary Morey, dau. of Mary (Bartlett)(Foster) Morey.", in Mayflower Quarterly, Vol. 48, p. 127-130.

Another article is Barclay, Mrs. John E., "Mary Lucas, probable wife of Nathaniel Atwood" in the American Genealogist, 41:200-5 (1902).

She was admitted to the church in 1683: "Mary, wife of Nathaniel Wood" [Ply. Ch.Recs 1:5:4 in Pub.Col.Soc.Mass 2:251]

On a list of church members dated 10 Mar 1703 appears: "Mary Wood The wife of Deacon Nathll Wood" [Plymouth Church Records, in Pub.Col.Soc.Mass 22:192] (old style date)

Note: There is an IGI entry giving a marriage date of Jan 21, 1683. I do not know the source beyond that.
