They were disowned for their involvement in the Regulator movement.

1768: Signed Regulator letter at meeting.

1771: Battle of Alamance.
I believe by the early 1770s, they may have had involvement with the Lost Creek MM in Jefferson Co., TN.

1771 William and Juliatha move their family to Chestnut Creek, Virginia (then Montgomery Co., now Grayson Co.) The lived there shortly, returned to North Carolnia, but then were back, owning 593 acres of land in Galax by 1775.

12m-5-1778: Rebekah, Catharine, & Juliatha Cox, migration recorded in & from Cane Creek MM to New Garden MM.

1782: Mont Co. (Grayson Co.), Va, William Cox taxed on five hourses, fifteen head of cattle.

c. early 1789: Family moves to Hawkins Co., Tennessee (where dau. Catherine Ruddick had settled 5 years earlier). There they had a 145 acre tract of land.

c. 1798/9: They move to Knox Co., Kentucky.

Timeline:
*14 Feb 1745: He has 50 acres surveyed in Lancaster Co., PA.
*23 Aug 1746: Marries Ann Cox
*1759: Moves to NC (his mother and several siblings had already moved there in the preceeding years). They settled near the Cane Creek MM, but further east than his siblings.
Spring 1770: His family becomes members of the New Garden MM.
*1772, he build a home in Fincastle Co. (which later became Montgomery Co., then Wythe Co., 1790, Grayson Co., 1792, and eventually Carroll Co.), on the banks of Chestnut creek near present day Piper's Gap in Carroll Co., Virginia, along the border of Surry Co., NC. They became members of the Tom's Creek MM in Surry Co., NC.

During the revolutionary war, William did not take the oath of allegiance to the rebellion's cause. This was apparently a result of his Quaker interpretation of biblical injunctions, "swear not at all" and "above all things my brethren, swear not", in which Quaker's found such oaths to be in conflict with their pursuit of truth. However, William Rudduck Sr., was found in Capt. Flower Swift's company of Quakers, but noted as being "not fit enough to serve."

Information taken from Hanneman, 1993:

William Ruddock and his wife were Quakers who lived in Chester Co., Pennsylvania until about 1740, at which time they moved west to Menallen Twp. in Lancaster Co., PA. In Chester Co., they probably belonged to the Londongrove monthly meeting there, however [Hanneman, 1993] found no land records for William Ruddock. In Lancaster Co., William acquired a grand of 100 acres, surveyed on March 20, 1741, and there they attended the newly established Newberry monthly meeting. In 1749, his land became part of York Co. with the formation of that new county, and today it lies within the confines of Adams Co., PA. [Hanneman, 1993] found no deed of sale for the land in Lancaster Co., either to or from William Ruddock, indicating he probably never obtained a grand to his land. Hanneman estimates that he probably died there about 1752, leaving no estate. His wife Alice moved with her son John and his family to North Carolina in 1754.

William Ruddock's parentage is NOT established. There were several clans of Ruddicks, Reddicks, Riddicks, etc., in the colonies at that time, and he may have come from any of those, or he may have been an immigrant himself. As early as 1637 a Richard Redock immigrated from England to the Isle of Wight Co. in Virginia, a John Redicke immigrated in 1643, another John Reddock in 1750, an Alexander Reddock in 1653. A James Riddick b. 1629/30 and m. 1652 to Mary Dunstan lived in Surry Co., Virginia with a sizable family, including a son Robert b. c1653 who has been theorized to be the father of this William Ruddock. In fact, many of the Riddicks in Isle of Wight Co., Va., adopted the Quaker faith, and these Virginia Riddick's were quite prominent and large slave holders. It is very plausible that William Ruddock descends from one of these Virginia Riddick pioneers. There was also another clan of Reddocke's that appeared early in Boston about 1637/8, when John Reddocke/Ruddocke is mentioned as one of the first settlers of Dusbury, Mass. He was a native of Trowbridge, England, and a son of Jollif (d. 1649 Boston). His descendants are later found in Providence RI and Oyster Bay, Long Island. There were also many later immigrants. Anyway, this demonstrates that there are many potential theories for his parentage.

Some theories that have been fielded include:
* William may have been a son of a Robert Reddick, b. c1665, who resided in Chester Co., Pa, and died at Newton in 1736/7. Unfortunately, the settlement of his estate mentions no heirs.
* William may have been a son of Robert Riddick b. c1653 in Nansemond Co., Va., who purchased 100 acres there on 24 June 1671 and was residing there in 1704. This Robert was the son of James Riddick (b. 1629/30, d.aft 1680) who . 1652 Mary Dunstan, and who lived in Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co., Va. The direction of migration from Va to Pa is somewhat questionable.
* He may have been a New England puritan who was converted to the Quaker faith, perhaps by the teachings of George Fox, William Edmondson, etc.

Timeline:
1740: Move to Lancaster Co, PA
1742/3: William and his son James were commissioned to built a road from Marsh Creek settlement (present day Gettysburg) to the towns of Lancaster and York.
June 1749: They join the Warrnigton monthly meeting (near Wellsville)
abt 1752: Assumed to have died, presumably in York Co., Pa
1754: His widow and son's family move to NC.

From [Andi Harmon, Irish Quaker Immigration into Pennsylvania]: "A meeting was held at the ho use of William Cox, at Hockessin, in Mill Creek Hundred, in New Castle Co., as early as 1730, but was not regularly established until 1737. The meeting received the name of Hockessin from an Indian village formerly near the place. Among the first settlers were John Baldwin, William Cox, and the Irish Friends, Henry and John Dixon. In 1738, a meeting-house was built, and enlarged in 1745."

On 2m-3-1753 (Apr 3, 1753), he was recorded has having migrated frmo the Newark MM, Kennett Co., Pa to Cane Creek MM, in Orange Co., North Carolina.

In Cane Creek records are other Coxs, that are likely his brothers. These include (with wife's name): Benjamin & Martha Cox, and Thomas & Mary Cox, and Isaac & Phebe (Allen) Cox.

!Will: Dated 20-1mo-1767 (= 20 Mar 1768), proved in Feb Court, 1767 (1767/8). Gives Harmon Cox "that whole tract of land on the east side of Deep River, whereon he now lives".

Belived to have immigrated with his parents from England to New Castle, Delaware in 1708.
His point of origin is variously cited as Berkshire or Gloucestershire, England.

About a year later, moved to nearby Kennett, Chester Co., Pennsylvania, purchased 25 acres in Brandywine, or between the forks of the Brandywine river where Bradford Twp. was later established, on 7-8-1708.

His father (at his death in 1712) left John 400 acres of land on a branch of Cooper's creek, Glouchester Co., West New Jersey.

Descendants of Thomas Cox gives a death date of 4 July 1708, and cites as the source an article in Heritage Issue #4 (Jun 1988), by Betty L. Cox Baker, of Granbury TX. This date is almost certainly incorrect, considering that his father wrote his will on 20 May 1709, with a codecil on 13 Dec 1711, and bequests to his son John, demonstrating that his father believed his son to be living as of those dates.

Notes from Al Westel cited in [Griffis] say that in 1714 John bought land south [of the forks of the Brandywine River] and moved into a farm in present day Kennet Twp, Chester Co., Pa. He belonged to the Society of Friends there (Quakers). However, about 1714 he was disowned from the Quaker meeting "for overt evil acts of fraud", and for his refusal to "give satisfaction" (appologize publicly). He persisted in this refusal for about six years, until final reconciling with the Quakers in 1719. John and his wife Rachel disappear from Quaker records about 1736.

In Ben Franklin's journal, there is a mention on 29 Sept 1737 of Clement Plumerstead, esq., late Mayor, who made a great feast for his citizens (Clement Plumstead was a mayor of Philadelphia).
* A web page claims that Sarah Biddle, b. 23 Oct 1678, m(2) Clement Plumstead on 14 Mar 1703/4 in Mansfield Twp., Burlington Co., NJ, and that this Clement died 17 Jun 1705.
