No marriage record has been found for Nathaniel Freeman. The given name of the mother of his children was Mary, as was the name of his wife of his old age, allowing for the possibility for her to be one and the same individual. [MD 8:91; NEHGR 20:61], [Barnstable Co. PR 8:91], [MFIP Wm Brewseter p.96]

He served Eastham as a Justice of the Peace in 1707, and town clerk and selectman.

Surname possibly Howland [MF VI:357]. [MFIP, Wm Brewster p.96], says prob. dau. of Zoeth an d Abigail (--) Howland. Prob. b. Datmouth 23 Jan 1665/6.

"A circumstantial case for the identity of Nathaniel's wife as Mary Howland, has been proposed for the naming of the grandchildren of Nathaniel and Mary Freeman. Their daughter, Abigail Freeman married Samuel Smith and had a son named Zoeth Smith. Zoeth was an unusual name and was found in relatively few families. A search of the family of Zoeth Howland revealed a daughter Mary, bron 1665/6. The age at death of widow Mary Freeman makes it possible for her to be one and the same as Mary Howland." !Birthdate-Marriageyear-Death: Ancestrial File.

From DAR Lineage Book 144:223 (1991) #143725: John Reed (1730-1803) served as lieutenant and Captian by brevet, 1777-83, in the New Jersey troops.
[DAR Lineage Book 134:199 (1917) #133655]: John Reed was under the command of Col. Francis Barber and General Lafayette. [DAR 27:274 #26743]: He served in the Indian Campaign of 1779 and was at the surrender of Yorktown, b. Hunterdon Co., New Jersey.

    The following *might* be him:

16 Oct 1784: John Reed witnessed will of Andrew Smith of Hopewell, Hunterdon Co., NJ [NJ Archives XXXVII:327]

10 Dec 1788: [New Jersey Calendar of Wills, NJ Archives XXXVI:219]. Adm of Jacob Swallow of Amwell, Hunterdon Co., NJ. Int. Adm'r: Obediah Hunt. Fellow bondsman: John Reed. 6 Dec 1788: Inventory L91.1.10 made by John Reed & Samuel Hill.

!Census (1800): Turkeyfoot Twp., Somerset Co., Ohio. 00001-00001-00.

    ** PARENTAGE IS ONLY A CONJECTURE ***
Parentage conjectures: On 2 June 1771, Joseph Reed of Amwell Twp. made a will in which he names John, the son of his deceased brother Andrew Reed. This is the best theory so far. For Andrew's parentage, see NJ Arch. Vol. 30, pg. 392. (He was the son of Joseph and Anne Reed of Trenton, NJ).

Another plausible candidate seems to be ruled out. Richard and Mary Reed of Amwell Twp. had a son John, but "1700-1800 A History of East Amwell, NJ" p.160 states that this John Reed, b. 6 July 1742, m. 6 June 1775 to Leah Golden in Pennington, d. Jun 1829 in New Market., etc. (Courtesy of Paula Radwanski, Dec 1995).

!Will: Somerset Co., Will Book 1, pg 195-6. Dated 20 Feb 1802, Registered (proved) 22 Feb 1803. Names wife Thankful, "only son" Jeremiah Read.
Threee daughters "Reachel", "Rhoda", and "Else" (husband John Mitchell). Grandchildren: John Read, John Letts, and John Strawn. He seems to indicate that Else is deceased, and leaves a legacy to her children "by Mitchel". Witnesses: (justices): John Shiner, Robert Shiner, David King. Executor: son Jeremiah Read.

    !Birth-Death-Marriage: Ancestrial File ANF:4JVT-GR

!Children: Bucks Co. Church Records of the 17th and 18th centuries, Vol. 3, page 94, by Anna Miller Watring, 1994. Richland Monthly Meeting: Births and Deaths: "Children of Jacob and Staunchy Strawhent, now Strawn: William Strawn b. 17th day of 11th month, 1749; Daniel Strawn b. 27th day of 3rd month, 1952 and d. 10th day of 9th month, 1819; Mary Strawn b. 21st day of 2nd month, 1754; Hannah Strawn b. 8th day of 4th month, 1756; Josiah Strawn b. 28th day of 10th month, 1758; Job Strawn b. 12th day of 10th month, 1760; Jerusha Strawn b. 14th day of 12th month, 1762; Abel Strawn b. 12th day of 3rd month, 1765; Enoch Strawn b. 1st day of 9th month, 1768."

He was probably born in Middletown twp in the year 1717, since in 1739 he is old enough to be named his mother's executrix. Note that his father died in 1720, and his parents were married in 1716, thus definatively bounding his birthdate. He was the old son of his mother by her second husband Lancelot Strawn.

His grandson John Straughan (son of Daniel) recorded in 1848 that his grandfather was a man of veracity and candor, five feet ten inches tall, stout of brain and limbs.

22 May 1740: His name appears on a Middletown marriage certificate between Robert Lucas and Sarah Croasdale of Newtown, dau. o fWilliam Croasdale.

    7 Jan 1738: Named in mother's will.
May 2 1740: Appears on marriage certificate fro Robert Lucas and Sarah Croasdale of Newtown, dau. or William Croasdale.

Between the sprint 1748 and fall of 1749, tehy moved to Haycock Twp, now the Borough of Quakertown, which lies east of Richland Manor and Twp. On 6 May 1752, Joseph Tomlinson of Makefield, Bucks Co., PA, yeoman, sold Jacob Strawhen of Haycock Twp (for 5 shillings -- essentially free) 255 acres & 98 percehs in Haycock Twp, witnessed by Samuel Twining & Tho. Chapman.

1784: He erected a fine stone hous near the village called Strawntown three miles east of Quakertown, which he kept until his death in 1800, and then passed to his son Enoch until it was sold after his death in 1849. Recently it was owned by Mrs. Natalie Platoff Nichols and her sister, Mrs. Ahlum. It has recently been condemned in order to build a highway, so it is uncertain whether it still stands.

He served on the Bucks Co. committee of Safety on 15 Dec 1774 as the member for Haycock Twp. As it became evident that the revolutionary war was imminent, he resigned on 21 July 1775 along with Thomas Foulke, the member from Richland, being unable as Quakers to serve in the war. His brief service on this committee does qualify descendants for membership in the DAR.

1779: Jacob Strawhen Sr recorded as owner of 350 acres in Haycock Twp, w/4 hourses & 6 head of cattle.
    1781: 360 acres, 3 horses, 7 head of cattle.
    1782: 350 acres, 2 horses, 7 cattle.
    1783: taxed 4/14/6.
    1784: 360 acres, 4 hourses, 5 head of cattle, 5 dwellings, 5 outhouses, inhabited by 25 while.
    1785: 360 acres, 3 horses, 9 head of cattle.

Jacob and Christiana were faithful members of the Richland Quaker Meeting.
They are undoubtedly buried at the Quaker cemetery at Richland, although no stones are now visible for them.

In addition to farming, it is said that Jacob Strawhen engaged in pottery making. His grandson, John Straughan (son of Daniel) recorded in 1848 that his grandfather was a man of veracity and candor, five feet, ten inches tall, stout of brain and libs. He also makes incorrect claims about the ages of Jacob and Christiana at the times of their death (86 and 97 resp.)
