Notes

His folks died in England of Colera. He was then an orphan, and he thought his last name was "Baker", so he adopted it. He then stode away on a ship, and rode around the world for a while. He eventually jumped off in Portland Oregon. He was caught, and forced back onto the ship. As the ship left port, he jumped overboard when the ship was about 5 miles out to sea, and swam back to port. (Told to me by Grandpa Lyle) !Census 1880: Vol 2, SD 110, ED 72, Sheet 25, pg. 11. Alice S. his wife 1848-1925" The Oregon Historical Records Index contains an entry: Date 12-31-1874, record type: Military, Name: Baker, Wm., County: Linn, Source: genealogical. _____________________________________ Research: Grandpa Lyle said that he married and had several kids. Then he remarried a second time to a Snodgrass. Grandpa thinks her name was Alice Snodgrass. I haven't yet found him in the 1860 or 1870 censuses, although I have searched. One long shot is a William Baker, age 34 [b. 1835/6] b. England, Carpenter, $2500, living in San Francisco ward 10 in the 1870 census, with wife Hannah, age 40 b. Ireland. The age, birthplace, etc., are all plausible matches. Enum 19 Aug 1870.
