His father was a vet. of the rev. war. He was born in South Carolina, of Irish descent, but moved with his family to Kentucky (presumably the Trigg Co., Ky area) when only a boy. He lived there until 1830, when he loaded the family's belongings onto ox-teams and moved them to Taylorville, Christian Co., Illinois. He built a log cabin on a tract of land there, where they lived for two years, when they moved to South Fork Twp, where he acquired 160 acres on sections 12 and 13 from a government grant at $1.25 per acre, consisting of unimproved prairie. There he erected a log cabin measuring 16x18 feet. He made his living farming, but also raised stock. He did most his trading in Springfield, but often had to drive his stock to St. Louis. He was a member of the Methodist Church, and active in the organization of schools and roads. Source: [Bio. of William F.
