Notes
!Burial: Letter from Lillian Briggs Gosman to her cousin Adele Ronzone Diem, dated Sept 23, 1956. She says: "I have information on our great grandfather Gabirel Case died 5/29/43 in N.Y.City when 44 years of age. He was laid to rest in the old Rutgers cemetery, downtown New York, but removed in 1866 to Woodlawn Cemetery, N.Y.City...
!Burial: Letter from Ida May & Al Briggs to Lillian (Briggs) Gosman dated 2/1/52, described under notes for Gabriel Case, son of this individual, states that a Gabriel Case, who died at age 44, was transferred to Woodlawn Cemetery on 12/20/1866 from Rutgers Street Cemetery, NYC. This is obviously him.
!Parentage: In a letter dated July 7, 1953 from Lillian (Briggs) Gosman to her niece Ida May, which I found in a large stack of genealogical notes that she left behind, she wrote: "I have found that Gabriel Case, the father of Julia Ann (MY grandmother) was the son of Gabriel and Abigail (Banning) Case. Gabriel & Abigail were married at Barkshamsted, Conn in 1783. They lived at German Flatts, Herkimer Co., NY in 1790 and removed later to Black River Country, Jefferson County, N.Y., where he was a farmer. He died at Saratoga Springs, Saratoga Co., NY in 1801. Abigail returned to Black River COuntry, NY where she died after a second marriage to Ezekiel Cheever by whom she had 2 children and the account state 'Ezekiel got away her property'". Before finding this in her stacks of old notes, I had found IGI baptism listing for Gabriel Case, bp. 7 Mar 1790 Litchfield, CT, so of Gabriel and Abigail (Banning) Case.
As far as I know, Lillian Briggs Gosman did not solve his parentage, but she felt strongly that he descended from John Case who, with brothers Thomas and William, came to America from England on the ship "Dorset" and settled in Hartford Conn. about 1635. He m. there 1656/7 Sarah Spencer and had six sons. More on this is in the 1956 letter.
!Census (1830): G. Case, 11th Ward, NYC. 1M(<5),1M(5-9),1M(20-29), 1F(<5), 1F(5-9), 1F(10-14), 1F(20-29). [Note: Ages for Gabriel and Ann seem a few years off. There would also seem to be a few unaccounted for members.]
Note: The 11th Ward of NYC is on south east Manhattan island, bounded on the south by Rivington, on east by the East River, on the north by 14th Street, and on the west (after 1837) by Clinton Ave. Before 1837 it extended 2 blocks further west, but in 1837 the western half became Ward 17. Note that Gabe Case Jr.'s obit says he was born on Clinton St. in 1830, thus identifying the above 1830 entry as Gabriel Case (Sr).
