    Notes:
In Denmark at this time, surnames were not used the same way as they are today. It was custom ary for children to get the FIRST name of their father, with either "-sen" or "-datter" appended to the end of it. We can easily conclude, therefore, that Jens's father's first name was something like Ander or Anders, but cannot conclude much about his father.

    Notes:
Grandpa thinks her first name was Alice. Also he said that he thinks she had siblings by th e names Ella, Jim, and Oliver. However, I may have misunderstood, because I wasn't sure whether he said that these were the siblings of Alice or siblings of Pearl (kids of Alice).

He also said (on 8/29/93) that he remembers meeting a nephew of hers named Glenn Larkins.

!Birthdate: Larkins Diary. Says: "Salome A. Larkins was Born August the 10th 1848".

She didn't like her birthname "Salome", so she swapped the names and went by "Alice S."

    !Death: Oregon Death Index: "[Name=]Baker, Alice S., [County=]Linn, [Date=]4/5/25, [Cert#=]85.

Appears on 1850 census as Solomon, age 2, b. Indiana. That census was taken Sep 16, 1850.
Appears on 1860 census as Solome A., age 11, b. Oregon. That census was taken Aug 16, 1860. The Oregon birth is more consistent with the family traveling the Oregon trail in 1847.
This places his birthdate between Aug 16 and Sep 16, 1848.

    Birth: 1837 2
    Notes:
His folks died in England of Colera. He was then an orphan, and he thought his last name wa s "Baker", so he adopted it. He then stode away on a ship, and rode around the world for a while. He eventually jumped off in Portland Oregon. He was caught, and forced back onto the ship. As the ship left port, he jumped overboard when the ship was about 5 miles out to sea, and swam back to port. (Told to me by Grandpa Lyle)

Grandpa Lyle said that he married and had several kids. Then he remarried a second time to a Snodgrass. Grandpa thinks her name was Alice Snodgrass.

I haven't yet found him in the 1860 or 1870 censuses, although I have searched.
One long shot is a William Baker, age 34 [b. 1835/6] b. England, Carpenter, $2500, living in San Francisco ward 10 in the 1870 census, with wife Hannah, age 40 b. Ireland. The age, birthplace, etc., are all plausible matches. Enum 19 Aug 1870.
Another apparent mismatch: Albany, Linn Co., OR, enum 16 July 1870, hh 443/436: Baker, William B., 37 farmer, $100/Illinois, Eliza 32, Keeping house, b. England, Mary E. 12 Iowa, James W. 10 Iowa, Idaho J., 5 Idaho.

    on 1828 at Union Co.,Indiana

    Children:

  • Jonathan Ferguson (7 DEC 1829-)
  • Bethany Ferguson (20 MAR 1831-)
    Notes:
G.E.Howell's records gave his birth place as Stokes Co., N.C., and year as Abt. 1755, while t he below reference gave exact date and York Co., Va.
The above did give a christening as York Co., Va., though.

Note: Proof that this John Ferguson is the father of Mary Margaret Ferguson comes from will material printed in O'Byrne below, where a "Mary Chimault" (Chenault) is named.

It might seem incredible that his last child was born when he was 76 years old, but this information comes from revolutionary war pension files that are basically original records.

The following are misc. early records that contain the name "John Ferguson".
It is not known whether any of these refer to the John Ferguson of this database entry.

There is a record of a John Fergusson, Esq., of Westham Cottage dying on Oct 1, 1824 in Richmond, VA, at age about 53. This appears in the Richmond Enquirer paper on 8 Oct 1824. [Puts his birthdate at c.1771, possibly a child of this John Ferguson?] Note the spelling with 2 ss's in the paper.

There is a Marriage bond in Amelia Co., VA, of John Ferguson and Olive Williams, on Apr 21, 1789.

On Aug 20, 1746, John Ferguson appears as a tithable in Augusta Co. Court Records.

    --------------------
There are also the following marriage bonds in Amelia Co., VA: 26 Nov 1761: Francis Farmer and Mary Fargus. (dau. of John Ferguson)
Note: This John would be too old to be the current entry.
9 Apr 1760: Robert Ferguson and Martha Lorton
Note: A good chance that these are the parents of the John that married
Olive Williams in this same county.
23 Apr 1789: Robert Ferguson and Sarah Stewart

    Notes:
She is mentioned in her grandfather Barrow's will, where he left her some Pewter. This can b e found in "Barrow: An Early Southern Family" by Mae Belle Barrow North, Vol 1 no1/2/3/4 under one cover, 1987", the will being in part 3.

I got some information somewhere saying she died 1830 in Pulaski, Kentucky. However, given the second marriage of John Ferguson in 1828 ["Roster of Soldiers and Patriots of the American Revolution buried in Indiana" Compiled by Roscoe C. O'Bryne, 1939, pg. 139-140], this appears rather non-credible. It is much more likely that she died in Boone County, Indiana circa 1825.

Debbie sent me a descendancy chart on 7/18/97 in which her death was labelled as abt 1827 in Pulaski Co., Ky.

    Notes:
The information about William Barrow, wife, and son came from George Erwin Howell. Researc h on this branch was actually done by his cousin who lives in Washington, but I don't have her name at this time.

The father of William Barrow is not known. However, I found this record in the Carnegie Library:
John Barrow, son of Edward and Elizabeth Barrow, was born 20 Feb 1729
at Farnham Parish, Richmond Co., Virginia.
This looks VERY much like a sibling, and thus the connection to his father, as shown here.

Death date in LDS is: 14 Nov 1819.
