    Notes:
He first appears in New England records at Plymouth on 2 Jan 1638 when he was haled into a co urt "for bringing a barke from Greenes Harbor [now Marshfield] on the Lords day." There is nothing to prove that he considered his home to be Plymouth at that time. As a single man it isnot unlikely that he considered his home to be under his hat, aboard his ship. But nineteen months later he married a Plymouth girl, who had recently moved there from Scituate, and before his marriage he had been granted (7 Jan 1639) "a garden place next to John Barnes" on the Eele River side of Plymouth next to Duxbury.
When the Bowers moved to Cambridge in 1643, he apparently went there also, for a record there on 4 Nov 1646 reads: "Goodman Knowles for his swine divers times going without keeper is fined 1s.6d." His son was born "in Boston" (according to the Cambridge records), but by Dec.1649, he was back at Plymouth, for according to Plymouth records of 1 Dec.1649 he was prosecuted "for denying passage of cattell in the highway".
On 12 May 1653, he and his ship were ordered by the Plymouth Council of War to be pressed for service in a possible conflict with the Dutch of New Amsterdam. Sometime about this time was when he seems to have moved to Eastham.

Richard Knowles was a shipmaster and probably spent much of his career trading up and down the coast. It is unknown whether he made any trans- Atlantic voyages or traded with the West Indies. The probate records of a Boston merchant named Joshua Foote in 1655 show that Richard Knowles was one of his customers for goods. On 12 May 1653, when the possibility of armed conflict with the Dutch New Amsterdam settlement was feared, one of two barques pressed for service was "the Barkqe in which Richard Knowles sayleth, with him the master thereof..." Prior to his marriage, he might not have had a permanent home on land, considering instead his boat to be his home.

After his marriage he was granted a lot in Plymouth next to John Barnes on the Eele River side of Plymouth next to Duxbury and near to George Bowers. He must have also some time farming for in 1642 the crop of Richard Knowles is mentioned in a grant to John Groome.

Parentage: As far as I know, unsolved. One source claimed he was the son of John Knowles b. 1 Nov 1596, d. 1685, m. bef 1614 Elizabeth, and Grandson of William and Grace (Clavell) Knowles. That same source gave his birthdate as 17 Sep 1617, but had no sources listed.

    Children:

  • Jerathmeel Bower (2 MAY 1650-)
    Notes:
He was a planter and an early settler at Scituate in the Plymouth Colony, where he was freema n 7 March 1637 and a town officer. By the spring of 1639 he had removed to Plymouth, and on 5 March 1639 was elected constable for the whole of that town, although he did not sell his lands at Scituate or buy at Plymouth until 1640. He purchased lands at Eele River from Governor Winslow, who reserved the right of repurchase in part in case he should himself decide to settle there. He soon received complaints for not allowing the passage of cattle, and a committee was appointed to lay out ways through his land where they would be least prejudicial to him. In 1640 "John Barnes and George Bower", Richard Knowles's nearlest neighbor and his father-in-law, were given charge of procuring timber for the new Colony jail. In January 1642 a dozen or more Plymouth men contracted for building a barque on shares, a sixteenth part each to Mr. William Bradford, John Atwood, George Bower, Edward Bangs, and others. But George Bower soon removed to Cambridge, apparently for the education of his sons. On 31 May 1652 he was called before teh Court for voting when not a freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In his will, dated 8 November and proved 30 December 1656, he did not mention his daughter Ruth, but bequeathed to his wife, his sons Benanuel, John and Jerathmeeel, and his young daughters Patience and Silence. The parish registers of Braithwell, co. !Will: (BLW:8): Exhibited at Plymouth Court 2:2:19 on 3 Mar 1663 on oath of Mr. Thomas Allin of Barnstable. Dated 3 Mar 1663, mentions: "my son Ephraim Lewis", "my son George my son Thomas my son James my son Edward and my son John", "my wife Mary Lewis".

The History of Scituate, Massachusetts [1831, p. 303], by Samuel Deane, stated that he married as a first wife Sarah Jenkins in England. This theory has been repeated several times, including in BLW. The theory was disproved in TAG 72 (1997) in an article by Gordon L. Remington (note addendum in TAG 74:258), where the marriage record and identity of his (only) wife was identified. Note that article in TAG Jan 1993 24-28 also suggests that the Sarah Jenkins claim appears to be wrong, and that he probably had a single wife named Mary.

He was a clothier in East Greenwich, Co. Kent, England. It is not known when he came to Massachusetts, but he owned land in Scituate in 1633 and was living in Plymouth in that year. He was a member of the Plymouth Church, being dismissed in 1634 to join the church in Scituate. He and his brother John and adjacent lots in Scituate and were known as "the men of Kent". In 1636, George was named a freeman, and his brother the following year.

In 1639, he moved to Barnstable and bought a lot second west of Hyannis Road. He had several large parcels of land, some of which were later sold to his sons, Edward and John. In 1648 and 1650 he was surveyor of highways, in 1649 a juryman, and in 1651 a constable. He was a Separatist or Pilgrim, cothier turned planter by necessity, large property owner, and one of the earliest settlers at Barnstable. He was probably buried with the other first settlers near the seashort. His will was exhibited at court 3 Mar 1663. Notes:
The father of Jeanne, Hester, Antoinette, Francois, and Marie was very probably Jacques Mahie u. He was a witness to the betrothal of Francoise Mahieu and Daniel Cricket. He and his wife (name not recorded) received communion in the Leiden Walloon Church on 10 Jun 1590, with letters of transfer from the Walloon Church in London, dated 30 April 1590.

He came from Lille, now in the northern part of France. Formerly it was of Walloon Flanders. Heavily protestant, the area was captured by Catholic armies under Parma in 1578, and many Walloon Calvinists fled to England directly, while others fled north towards teh Protestant cities of Bruges and Antwerp. When those cities fell in 1585, refugees went across to England or north to Zeeland and Holland. Apparently the Jacques Mahieu was among these refugees, taking with them their young daughters Mary and Franciose.
