[Note: The age for Willard B. should have been "21", not "91"] Census (1880): Yorkville, Brown Co., Dakota Territory (Roll 111: 84-15-1): York, Harriet, White Female age 29, wife of Willie York and in household of Alvih York, married, Occ=Keeping House, b. Canada, Father b. Vermont, Mother b. New Hampshire. !Obituary: Dated 5/13/1898 in Rosaeu Co., MN. Janet Lindquist has ordered a copy and will be sending a copy to me (email of 2 Sep 2010). On death certificate of Edna M. Reed, her mother is listed as "Harriett A. West" (or possibly Wisk) born in Vermont. She was of a Methodist upbringing and was active in the Methodist church her whole life. -------------------------------------------------------- There is only one Harriet West found in the Vermont Censuses of 1850, 1860 of approximately the right age. She was 1 in the 1850 census. This was Hattie Amelia West, dau. of Asahel G. and Laura Emeline (Bonors) West of Morristown, Lamoile Co., Vermont. That Hattie Amelia was b. 4 June 1849. However, THIS IS NOT HER. After long research, I discovered that the Hattie of Morristown married Curtis J. Slayton in Dec 1869. Her identity and marriage record remain unsolved. Because Vermont Records have been so thoroughly scoured (all vital records and census records have been searched), perhaps the Canada theory should be considered more likely now. I think it is highly likely that she is a decendant of Thomas and Deborah (Freeman) West of Tisbury, Mass; Rochester Mass, and Montpelier Vt. There is this (unlikely) birth record: Hattie Pauline West, b. 14 July 1852 Tyringham, Berkshire Co., Mass., to George W. and Paulina C. (Baker) West. I believe it is likely that she was the daughter of John B. and Harriet E. West who resided in Pleasant Mount Twp., Blue Earth Co., Minnesota in 1870. Though not yet proven, there are a number of items making this hypothesis seem likely. First, John B. West was born in Vermont, his wife & children that were still living at home were born in Canada (dau. Ellen age 16 b. Canada demonstrates they were living in Canada in c1854). Evidence suggests that Hatta (West) York was b. Canada with Vermont connections. Next, John B. West was enumerated in the 1870 census adjacent to N. F. York. Nathaniel T. York obtained a land grant in Blue Earth county on Sept 10, 1870 - the same exact day that Alvah York obtained his land grant for land in adjacent Martin county from the same land office. Further, N.F. York (b.c1820), his wife, and his son, were born in Maine -- consistent with the origins of Alvah York.
