R. Stanley Harsh has argued that he might actually have been a son of Stephen Chenault Jr. (i.e., a grandson of Estienne), and born about 1720.
Since records in Rockingham Co., N.C. that refer to William Chenault never use "Sr." or "Jr.", it is assumed that only William Jr. moved, and that William Sr. died in Bedford Co., Virginia.
