Notes
King of England 1272-1307.
He won influence and fame suppressing the baronial revolt (1263-5) against his father, Henry III, and crusading (1270-72). Succeeding his father (1272), he carried out important administrative, judicial, and financial reforms, which increased royal power and weakened feudalism. By summoning frequent parliaments and including commoners in them, he contributed greatly to Parliament's development. Edward conquered Wales and incorporated it into England (1275-95). Although he also conquered Scotland in 1296, the remainder of his reign was occupied with Scottish revolts. [Random House Encyc.]
