Notes
King of England 1216-1272.
He succeeded his father as King when still a minor. His favoritism to foreigners led to resentment among his barons, who revolted against him and refused to finance his overseas campaigns. Forced to make substantial constitutional concessions by the so-called "Mad Parliament" (1258), he enlisted French and papal aid but the barons, under Simon de Montfort, defeated him at Lewes (1264). His son Edward's victory at Evesham (1265) enabled him to retain executive power while granting many reforms.
