Notes

King of France, 996-1031. He succeeded his father, Hugh Capet, in 996. He repudiated his wife in 989 and became interested in a relative, Bertha, wife of Eudes I, Count of Blois. They were married after Eudes's death, and robert was excommunicated (998). Separated (1001), he remarried, fathering four sons. He conquered Burgundy (1015) adding it to the French crown.
