He was a selectman of Plymouth in 1739/40, 1741, 1742, 1748, 1749, 1751, 1752, 1753, and possibly other years. On 12 March 1754, Joanna Holmes, widow, and Abner Holmes, mariner, both of Plymouth, were appointed administrators of the estate of Thomas Holmes, Yeoman, deceased, late of Plymouth [Konig 2:180, 229, 271, 3:4, 15, 46], [Plymouth Porbate Records 13:209-10], [Nat.Gen.Soc.Quarterly 74:96 (1986)] In Plymouth Church Records, Vol 1, Part II page 30, printed in Publications of the Colonial Society of Plymouth, Vol. 22, pg. 213, for the year 1715, is the baptism record: "Joanna, Jemima, Thomas & Abner the children of Thomas & Joanna holmes"
