Only one listed there in Orrington from Plymouth. Capt. Samuel Bartlett, from Plymouth Mass., was the first Merchant in what is now Orrington, Maine, in 1789. His store and wharf were at Bartlett's Cove and Point, above Bald Hill. His business was largely wholesale, as he imported many goods directly from Europe and the West Indies. He built the first vessel in the town, owned the first wheeled carriage, and ran packets to Boston. He was also a shipmaster, and built the first vessel built in Orrington. He was one of the most enterprising men of his time. He and his ship Sally were detained in France during one of the French Revolutions, nearly three years, from 1794 to 1797 (or 1793 to 1795, depending on the source). He also had an interest in several other vessels along with General John Crosby of Hampden.
