Notes

Robert Gosman was editor of the Kingston NY Courier and for a number of years on the staff of the New York Tribune. He attended Rutgers University in the class of 1830. He was a devout Christian of the Protestant faith. According to family tradition he was crippled from birth. Author of the manuscript "Life of John Vanderlyn", a biography of the American painter, whom he was also personal friends with. The manuscript is found in the New York Historical Society collections. Also seen cited is "Biographical Sketch of John Vanderlyn, Artist" by Robert Gosman, reprinted in Averill comprehenisve biography of Vanderlyn (possibly the same as the first manuscript, I'm not sure). !Census 1860: Kingston, Ulster Co., New York, enum 31 Jul 1860, hh 1401/1972: Robert Gosman, 50, editor, --/$400, b.
