The Immigrant. 13 Jan 1663: John Gatewood and Richard Silvester are witnesses to a deed of gift from Thomas and Jane Button to Charles Goodrich, in Farnham Parish, Rappahannock Co., Va. [Implies he is of legal age on that date -- if it is him and not an older John Gatewood] 2 Jun 1666: Jno. Gatwood was transported by John Catlett [Crozier, "Cavaliers & Pioneers -- Abstracts of VA Land Patents & Grants 1623-1666", p. 558] 19 Jul 1666: Jno Gatwood was transported by Mr. Thomas Button/Butten [Crozier, p. 562] 9 Dec 1676: Purchases 100 acres from John Gregory in South Farnham Parish. [Bk. 1677-82, p. 127] 1681: John Gatewood served as juror Apr-Aug 1685: John Gatewood again served as juror. 1685: In the settlement of George Boyce's estate, John Gatewood owed 316 pounds of tobacco to the estate. 1688: John Gatewood purchased land beyond the Peumansend, adjacent to Thomas Pitts. [T.E. Campbell, "Colonial Caroline: A History of Caroline Co., Virginia", p. 318] On p. 25 of same, records reveal Gatewoods to be living in Caroline Co. with land adjacent to other grants as early as 1687. 1704: John Gatewood paid tax on 400 acres(presumed in Essex Co., Va). Did not find deeds for the purchase(s) of this land, but it may include the 350 acres of land he says in his will was purchased from Edwin Thacker and Capt. Richard Hale. !Will: Dated 14 Nov 1706, proved 10 Jan 1707 Essex Co., Va, p.328. To my eldest son John Gatewood 100 acres that I formerly bought of Edwin Thacker lying on JohnCheesk's line. To my eldest daughter Frances Shackelford one shilling. Unto my son Richard Gatewood the plantation I now live upon and all the land pertaining thereto. Unto my son Thomas Gatewood 150 acres, part of land that I formerly bought of Capt. Richard Haile, now deceased, being also part of 5000 acres which did formerly belong unto Collo. Thomas Goodrich, Mr. Henry Aubrey and Maj. George Morrice all, deceased. Unto my son Henry Gatewood 75 acres beginning at a corner tree standing against simon Copner's house who is now deceased and running toward Joseph Billender's land. Also one six year old stear and one cow and calf. Unto my daughter Amie Burnett 4000 pounds of " sweetscented" tobacco and one bay mare with a blase in her face branded on ye rear butt with this brand, 3. All the rest of my worldly estate to be equally divided between my three younger children and my beloved wife and Sarah Gatewood and William Gatewood and Frances Gatewood.
