Notes
King of France 1108-1137.
Working to build the power of the crown over independent local nobles, he notably increased the importance of the royal courts. With Abbot Suger of St. Denis as his advisor, he worked closely with the church. He began a war (1104) against King Henry I of England, duke of Normandy, a struggle that was to continue intermittently for centuries. Before his death he arranged the marriage of his son, Louis VII, and Eleanor, daughter of teh duke of Aquitaine. [Random House Encyc]
